Mid Century Moonstone Cocktail Ring
Moonstones have been captivating jewellery wearers the world over for centuries. The Romans were mesmerised by the stone and believed it was formed from frozen moonlight. India considers the stone sacred offering the wearer gifts of fortune-telling and clairvoyance.
The Moonstone is worn as a symbol of love, healing and protection - making it the perfect talisman during pregnancy and motherhood. It has also been referred to as the "Traveller's Stone" offering protection to those travelling at night by the shine of the moon.
This fun example of a Mid Century design features a moonstone flower crafted from a cluster of cabochon stones set atop a silver basket setting. Each of the stones is a wee bit different adding to it's charm and speaking to the goldsmith's talent in crafting the piece.
The ring is definitely a show piece. It's delicate basket setting and gallery make it an unlikely contender for daily wear. It is designed to perch high above your finger so that optimum amounts of light can seep through the open basket setting giving the stones that extra glow.
The ring is in great vintage condition. Given moonstones are a delicate and soft stone, not many pieces have jewellery have worn the test the time. There are very minor scuffing to the surface of these stones which ive tried to capture in the photos but really can only be seen with a loupe. The structure of the ring and basket setting are in strong condition. There is no wear to the shank.
Moonstones are delicate and must be handled with care. It is recommended the ring be cleaned using warm water with a mild soap and carefully, if necessary use a soft bristled brush to clean any stubborn areas. The ring should not be submersed into water or jewellery cleaning solutions as this could cause the stones to fall out or become brittle/break. Care should also be taken with this ring as the claw settings are the stones are fragile and could easily be caught on clothing etc. The silver basket setting is also at risk of getting squished if you sat on it etc.
The ring is a size 55 EU.
The central moonstone measures 8mm in diameter. The surrounding 8 moonstones measure approx 4.3mm in diametre.
The ring sits approx 15mm above your finger and care should be taken to make sure it doesn't snag on anything.
